More History

The Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists was conceived by Carleton D. Speed, Jr. of Houston, Texas.  He set out to form a Society of independent earth scientists as early as the 1930s, but encountered resistance to his idea based on the fact that other such organizations were already in existence.  But Speed envisioned a different kind of society than those already formed.  He thought scientists affiliated with corporations or universities had their own in-house support system that independents, obviously, did not.  He wanted to create a network for scientists who struck out on their own and who wanted to work with other like-minded, ethical independents.  It wasn’t until after World War II when the number of independent earth scientists increased that Speed was finally able to form what is now SIPES.  The charter was granted February 27, 1963 and signed by the nine original members.
